Barack Hussein Obama II; born August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A. is the President-elect of the United States and the junior United States Senator from Illinois. On November 4, 2008, Barack Obama of the democratic party defeated John McCain and became the first African American to be elected President of the United States. In his victory speech, delivered before a crowd of hundreds of thousands of his supporters in Chicago, Obama proclaimed that "change has come to America." Born in Hawaii, Obama will be the first U.S. President born outside the contiguous United States. President-elect Obama will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States on January 20, 2009 succeeding George W. Bush.
